Asia is experiencing tremendous energy growth, as high as 18 per cent per annum in some of the more industrialized nations. By the year 2000, Asian countries will need an additional 280,000 MW of electric power. Meeting such needs through a conventional supply - side strategy alone would require 400 - 500 billion, placing daunting, if not impossible, demands on the financial and institutional capabilities of Asian nations and the world community. In addition, Asia's rapidly growing energy producting and consumption pose significant environmental threats.
