The urban household energy demand in Zambia is dominated by charcoal which accounts for 84 percent of the demand. Charcoal is made by the earth kiln method which has a conversion efficiency about 23 percent. This study was undertaken to assess the effects of wood harvesting for energy on the miomo ecosystem and to determine factors that promote or constrain the recovery and productivity of miombo after felling. The study was carried out in dry miombo woodland in the Chakwenga area in central Zambia.
