Wood and charcoal provide most of the energy used in developing countries. The combination of fast growing populations and shrinking forest resources causes fuelwood consumption to exceed sustainable yields over vast areas. The resulting depletion of forestlands leads to fuelwood scarcity and environmental degradation. These problems require action both on the demand side and on the supply side. On the demand side, more efficient stoves and charcoal kilns are needed. On the supply side, trees need to be planted and existing forest resources managed more effectively.
