Thoughts on the aesthetics of dams

s.f.

K9251

The relationship between function and aesthetics, in effect between engineering and art, is the basis of this paper. The author points out that sheer size of some of the world's largest dams, larger than any other civil structures, can present challenges without precedent for those who desing and those who observe them. Yet there are often underlying principles of proportion and form that, intentionally or not, are fundamental to their appearance.
