Biomass energy systems are the focus of much attention in Brasil. The brasilian alcohol program, the largest of its kind worldwide is the first and most developed of a series of alternative systems using biomass as feedstock in the country. This paper reviews several of seemingly different biomass energy systems currently under study or development in Brasil and elsewhere through the concept of the generalized biomass energy factory and points out their relevance for similar experiences in other countries.
