The sugar industry in Guayana is a major contributor to the country's gross national product. However, due to a number of problems plaguing the industry, it has been recommended that three of the eight sugar estates be closed. This would result in a significant loss of jobs, have social repercusions and loss of much needed foreign exchange from the loss of sugar sales. As an alternative to closure of the estates, this project proposes to examine the feasibility of converting the facibilities to ethanol production.
