Until just three or four years ago, we weren't greatly concerned about energy costs because of the seemingly large supplies of fossil fuels, gas, oil, and coal. In the western world, furthermore, we didn't worry about food because of bountiful harvests. We should note, however, that those harvests are achieved, at least in part, by the application of large amounts of fertilizer, which uses fossil fuels. So there is an interaction between the food and energy problems....
