This paper examines the land resource base as it is currently used in the production of fiber in the United States. Changes in land use are documented for the past two decades. Alternatives of intensive and extensive agricultural systems are evaluated for their potential impacts upon land use. Suggestions for biomass production are evaluated in the context of the relatively fixed land resources and in the context of both intensive and extensive alternatives for agricultural production.
