The 2007 edition of the Statistical Yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean maintains the modifications in content and design that were introduced in 2005. The objective was to reflect the changes in the demands of researchers who analyse the economic and social situation of the region and to incorporate the technological advances that modify the modes of dissemination and use of statistical information. This year’s issue of the Yearbook is made up of four chapters. The first covers demographic and social indicators, which attest to the special effort made to incorporate the gender dimension in statistical information. The second chapter presents basic economic, trade and balance-ofpayments statistics as well as national accounts. Reflecting the growing concern of the regional and international community for sustainable development, the third chapter provides available information on the environment and natural resources. Given the abundance of different and, at times, contradictory data now accessible to researchers through the Internet, special attention must be paid to the technical specifications relating to the source of the data as well as their definition and coverage. This information is presented in the fourth chapter, which deals with methodology and metadata.

En la presente edición del Anuario estadístico de América Latina y el Caribe 2007 se mantienen los cambios de contenido y de diseño introducidos en el año 2005. El propósito es responder a las nuevas exigencias de los usuarios analizan la situación económica y social de la región e incorporar los avances tecnológicos que modifican la difusión y el uso de la información estadística. El Anuario cuenta con cuatro capítulos. En el primer capítulo se presentan los indicadores demográficos y sociales, que reflejan el esfuerzo especial realizado para incluir la dimensión de género en la información estadística. En el segundo capítulo se reúnen las estadísticas económicas básicas, de comercio y balanza de pagos, y las cuentas nacionales. En virtud del creciente interés de la comunidad regional e internacional en el desarrollo sostenible, en el tercer capítulo se recopila la información disponible sobre el medio ambiente y los recursos naturales. La abundancia de datos —a menudo diferentes y a veces contradictorios— a los que los usuarios pueden acceder hoy en día mediante Internet obliga a prestar una especial atención a las fichas técnicas en las que se documenta el origen de los datos, su definición y cobertura. Esta información se presenta en el cuarto capítulo, sobre metodología y metadatos.
