Hacia una Producción más limpia en Latinoamérica a través de la integración de Educación Ambiental, Ingeniería y Administración de Negocios.
2016
Industrialization in Latin America has increased the levels of industrial pollution and resource
depletion as well as human exposure to harmful substances. With steady projected economic growth
in the coming years across the hemisphere, these negative impacts are likely to worsen, unless
effective interventions are developed and implemented. Cleaner Production (CP) has been promoted
around the world as a strategy to help industries decrease their environmental impacts and cost, while
improving efficiency and productivity. Despite nearly two decades of CP promotion and the
establishment of UN-sponsored National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPC) through the region,
smaller enterprises in Latin America still lack the knowledge, human and financial resources to fully
implement such strategies. In this three-year Project, we aim to promote and facilitate sustainable
industrial development throughout the Americas by creating regional centers of excellence for
education, development and implementation of best practices for Cleaner Production (CP) and
sustainable development. By introducing CP related topics in higher education curricula, especially
efforts for the introduction of practical experiences from students and academic staff, which allowed
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to learn about CP strategy and improve their efficiencies in a
sustainable way. Through a continuous interaction and experiences exchange from the partner
institutions, a higher capacity on CP was achieved. Therefore, this project created a new way to build
capacity to improve SMEs resources efficiencies and their productivity, while executing the learning
processes in universities. One of the major achievements in this project was the consolidation of a
multidisciplinary team willing to continue developing CP capacities through joint efforts with SMEs.
