Biofuels as an energy source have great benefits when compared to traditional fossil fuels, due to the
fact of its emission neutrality. Globally, biofuel crops and in particular biodiesel, considers a broad
spectrum of species, however differences in productivity, oil quality, climate change adaptation and
supply of other ecosystem services give rise to difficulties. Over the past 4 years, a group of researchers
from state universities have conducted systematic studies on the cultivation of Jatropha curcas
(Tempate) for commercial use as a source of oil to produce biodiesel. This species is being widely
studied worldwide, with Mexico at the center of its genetic distribution.
Being a non-domesticated plant, further research must still be done, to ensure geographical condition
control, as well as production and management which would enable the establishment of commercial
cultivation and under the focus of sustainable production. One of the most significant limiting factors
worldwide is the lack of floral synchrony and its irregularity, hence this work aimed at studying climatic
factors and genetic aspects that stimulate this physiological phenomenon. Trials set out at the
Experimental Station Fabio Baudrit of the UCR, located in Garita, Alajuela allowed to determine the
optimum wavelength for better photosynthetic performance, RNA protocol extraction, genetic profiling
of the gene bank and the influence that pruning has on flowering.
