Petroleum exploration in Nicaragua started in 1930. Since then, exploration programs have been conducted, including 34 wells drilled in both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, some of which have shown some presence of oil and gas. Results show that there may be some commercially viable deposits. However, this cannot be determined without additional prospecting and many more wells have to be drilled before a commercial discovery is confirmed
