Proyecto de Graduación (Maestría en Gerencia de Proyectos) Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Área Académica de Gerencia de Proyectos, 2018
In this project take place the analysis of risk management in the company Construcciones Peñaranda
S.A. Same that is dedicated to the execution of construction projects since 1997 for different government
institutions, has about 326 employees what places it as a large company. To carry out the analysis, a research
is first developed through tools such as surveys and observation, the information discovered points to the
organization's lack of knowledge about the processes for proper risk management or the techniques and
tools to carry it out. The specific objectives and their main conclusions are summarized below.
1. The current state of the organization is first analyzed to locate the main characteristics of the risk
management used in the company and different failures in risk management are identified, such as
the fact that there are no risk management plans for the projects, nor elaborate templates for the
analysis, follow-up or control of the same.
2. The good practices proposed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in the PMBoK® are
investigated and listed, from which processes such as planning, identification, qualitative and
quantitative analysis, response planning and risk control are obtained. This guide is used mainly
because the organization has been implementing processes belonging to PMBoK® for a while and
because general management requests it.
3. Once the investigations of the current state of the company and the good practices of the PMBoK®
have been carried out, the gap between the two is established, in which it is discovered that the
organization has many lacks, such as the no use of techniques or tools for the identification,
monitoring and control of risks, the employees are not trained and the importance and advantages of
an adequate risk management are not highlighted. These gaps can be filled with the proposed
solution.
4. A strategy is developed to close the identified gap, this solution proposal includes the processes
necessary for a methodical, constant and controlled risk management, as well as the creation of a
database for the identified risks. It is concluded from the work that the approximate cost of
implementation is around ¢ 127,520.00 and it is recommended to purchase tools such as @Risk or
Precision Tree with costs of ¢ 1,142,119.63 and ¢ 723,169.63 respectively.
