All the electric energy distribution companies need reliable devices for the metering of consumed power by their costumers, whether they‟re high or low energetic demand. In the last years, microprocessor based wattmeters have been appeared, developed by ABB and General Electric, that combine themselves the metering capacities of traditional electromechanical wattmeters with the electronic devices accuracy and the additional capabilities that they allow at an accessible cost for distribution companies. The correct programming and use of these electronic wattmeters, principal goal of this project, not only allow the recording of the consumed energy and the maximum demanded power, but places within the metering manager‟s reach useful tools that allow him to do a diagnosis of the electric network of any costumer. In the last years, the Heredia‟s Public Services Enterprise made the electronic wattmeters installation with software that fills the basic needs of collection, didn‟t taking advantage from full metering capabilities of them. The cost of implanting these changes is accessible, in the case of ABB wattmeters, and the Enterprise will assure the more detailed continuation of the costumers consume. The examination of the costumer electric installations incorporates the tools available on these wattmeters, so this project has a light modification to the former examination procedures. To be sure the metering will be reliable, it modified the wattmeter tests procedures in the laboratory, in order to assure the wattmeters installed, whether electronic or mechanical, make a fair and reliable power recording for both the costumer and the Enterprise.
