The purpose of this work was to establish a procedure that allows the user to have all the information about the actual costs for one or more construction projects accurately and on time. It also pretends to minimize the errors on the processing and handling of this information. It also seeks to facilitate the creation of various reports by orderly handing the data generated by a construction project. In order to meet these objectives, employees of a construction company were interviewed as well as other professionals and business people from this field. All of them considerer very important to handle this information properly and to have the cost data available as soon as possible. Commercial software packages that deal whit this problem were analyzed, concluding that they are complex and expensive. The work concludes with a series of recommendations about handling cost data and the design of a model to control the actual costs of a construction project. Finally, a software program was created to handle basic cost information such as materials, labor, sub-contracts, transportation, etc., making it easy to obtain useful cost information instantly.
