This design project was developed in a one-hectare piece of land located in San Ramón, Alajuela. It consists in coming up with a potential design for a greenhouse irrigation system. The idea is to grow vegetables inside this greenhouse. As we know, plants require an optimum daily amount of water to thrive properly. Water loss is an issue in traditional agriculture due to wind, sandy soils, and evaporation. Too much water can also be a problem if slow drainage is present. To develop this project it became necessary to meet with local San Ramón and Zarcero farmers, in order to acquire knowledge on the current agriculture practices in the area, as well as taking notes on similar successful projects, which could be improved. The proposed design also includes generation of enough electricity to power the entire water pumping system, which will allow the farmer to help protect the environment, and also to get economic benefits over time. To achieve this, both grid-tied and off-grid systems will be analyzed and taken into account. This will help farmers choose the one that best fits their needs. A user and maintenance manual will be presented to ensure the system works well and is properly handled. The project seeks to provide the individual with a clear idea on the current situation regarding alternative energy systems and their applications to make farming easier and more environmentally friendly. It has to be pointed out that access to these technologies is often limited for developing social groups with restricted monetary resources, of which farmers are perfect examples. They are also often excluded because of social gaps, and unfavorable national political policies.
