The versatility of the Langley method has been studied through the experimental measures of the solar direct spectral irradiance at ground along a large range of air masses, and theoretically generated spectra. The influence of both the absulute value of the total optical depth of the atmosphere and its variation during the measure period on (Io) values is presented in this work. This analysis has been performed because the impossibility for the total optical depth to remain constant during the measure period, it does not matter how good the atmospheric conditions are..
