Central receiver systems have resulted as the field where the most intensive efforts have been allocated by the leader countries in renewable energies. This fact was caused by the need of high concentration ratio and temperature when trying to implement solar energy into industrial activities. In this line central receiver systems are still the most promising concepts. With the work already done, the costs of the collector subsystem (heliofasts field) have been considerably reduced and the availability figures have been brought very close to 100. OVERVIEW. . The potential of this technology is enormous being possible to be applied to electricity generation or as industrial heat on conventroned and special processes as well. The set oif the six important solar power stations which are in operation nowadays, together with the other couple of solar thermal test facilities have provided considerable experience on collecting and transferring solar energy. Nevertheless additional research and development is necessary on fluids and storage systems as well as on solar receivers, which could be conceived even as chemical reactors, enlarging the possibilities of direct processes on the high concentrated focal point. This paper presents in detail the most relevant experiences, the lessons learned and the main development goalds and prospects of this technology in the future. Comparisons with other ways of generating electric power from the sun are provided. PRESENT STATUS OF THE SOLAR THERMOELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS. Central receiver systems. Distributed receiver technology. ECONOMICAL ASSESMENT. REFERENCES.
