Laboratory experiments were carried out in a fixed film digester to show the feasibility of the slaughterhouse wastewaters anaerobic treatment. The COD and BOD5 removals were respectively higher than 80 and 90. ABSTRACT. at organic loading rates varying from 1 to 3 kg COD.m-3 dig.d-1 and at hydraulic retention times between 1 and 2 days. The process temperature was 35oC. The experiments are going on at 25oC in laboratory scale digesters and also in a 4m4 pilot plant at the Colmar public slaughterhouse (France). Diluted paunch contents of bovines (about 5. INTRODUCTION. volatile solids.VS) and mixtures of grease, blood, meat residues and sewage sludges (about 6. DESIGN OF DIGESTERS. VS) can be digested in completely stirred reactors at 35oC. The first laboratory results were: -at a 30 days retention time, the biological yield was 400 1 biogas.Kg-1 VS input (55. SLAUGHTERHOUSES WASTES. CH4) with the diluted paunch contents of bovines. The organic dry matter was reduced by 45. RESULTS OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION EXPERIMENTS. , -At a 20 days retention time, the biological yield was 475 1 biogas.kg-1 VS input (70. CONCLUSIONS. CH4), with a mixture of slaughterhouse wastes and sewage sludges. The VS reduction was 60. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS.
