The R and D activities in progress in the United States on the development of biomass and wastes as renewable energy sources have reached the point where all phases of the technology are under active investigation. Highlights of this effort are briefly reviewed from the standpoint of energy impact, funding, carbon dioxide build - up in the atmosphere, and biomass production and its conversion to energy and synthetic fuels. Special attentation is given to alcohols because of the current interest in gasohol.
