Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica. Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción.

Proyecto de Graduación (Licenciatura en Ingeniería en Construcción). Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica. Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción, 2011.

This project will conduct the study on the use of bamboo as reinforcement in concrete elements, in comparison with steel, which is currently the most commonly used material in reinforced concrete. Bamboo tablets are the core of this study. They consist in a rectangular shape that is extracted from bamboo cane. This way, the bamboo will be combined with concrete to observe their behavior while working with concrete. In order to be able to use this –bamboo- the study will enhance or characterize the physical components of the specimens used as well the mechanical properties of this material. This is essential for good reinforced concrete design. Besides enhancing the characteristic of bamboo, one should analyze the behavior of bamboo while working with concrete. It is also the objective of the present project to determine the existing adherence of both materials when combined. At the same time the aim of the project is to establish the resistance of reinforced concrete with bamboo and compare the resistance of reinforced concrete with steel. The feasibility of using bamboo for this purpose shall be determined by the results generated in this study, and also should indicate what types of components can be used with this material as a reinforcement.
